The internet is slow becoming the most popular and most ifnluentual factor of football. The television was invented long befor ethe internet meaning that television got a head start, influencing football for years until the internet was created.
The internet is now so easily accessible that almost anyone can get online, whether it be at home, a library or school. The internet influences football in similar ways to television. Both television and the internet have a chance for discussion. Both do this in different ways. Television has the post match report and discussions after the game live whereas with the internet you can debate asnd discuss about the match for long after it has finished. The main reaso being you can post online whenever you want and the only time you cannot post your opinion is when someone closes the discussion. There are fan sites where you can enter a discussion about the latest match that has just been played, debating and discussing matters with fellow football fans. This is a positive thing for football because it is getting fans actively involved and created healthy arguements/discussions.
Another way in which the internet can influence sport is through specific Football teams websites. Every football team throughout the English leagues have a website for their team. This means that fans can easily get online and access the site of their favourite teams. On here you can read about the latest news stories, transfers as they happen, squad announcements and shopping online in the teams store. All of these and more can be done, but where they have the biggest influence is within the store. This is where people can buy the shirt of their favourite team and it even goes as far as their own range of clothing that has been created, specifically for fans of that team. For example, Liverpool FC have a website with a store that has their own exclusive range of clothing. This will mean that the fans are able to buy exclusive Liverpool FC merchandise easily, increasing profits for the club. This influences the game by getting more fans to be involved, whether its buying season tickets online, memberships to exclusive club videos or merchandise.

You can see from both the images above and below that marketing is a huge thignw hen it comes to the websites of clubs. They will have the footballers themselves model the most popular clothing that is to be sold as it will encourage fans to buy them, Thus influencing the sales of the club.
Podcasts are another great way to voice your opinion on the internet. You can record yourself talking about a recent game and then post the podcast online, meaning anyone has access to the podcast online.
The best source of influence along with income is advertisements online. They are everywhere you go on the internet. When you are browsing the internet you will get pop ups which will be trying to sell you their product or servies. When you are on the website of your club they popups and advertisements will be relevant to that club. For example if you were on the Arsenal website you would get pop ups trying to sell you flight tickets because their sponsor is Fly Emirates. This means that people will end up buying tickets every so often, increassing the income of both the company & the club.
Lastly their is need to mention social networking. Most players are on twitter and facebook meaning that you are able to set up a twitter account and you can follow players on that. This is a great way of fans to keep up to date with both their clubs & also with individual players.
POSITIVE
One positive effect of the internet is that it is helping to increase the revenue of most clubs, mainly due to the advertisements and online stores. When we see an advertisement we will photographically remember this, meanign when we are out and aobut, whether it be in a supermarket or sports shop, we will buy with what we remember from memory. Someone would be in a supermarket and buy Carlsberg as they haved seen it on the liverpool kit (Which was the sponsor for 17 years until 2010/2011 season. But by seeing these sponsors on the internet through pop ups or advertisements it makes you remember them as they are constantly popping up, it influences you when you wouldn't expect it to. Buying their products, e.g. Carlsberg, would give an increased revenue to Liverpool FC.
NEGATIVE
One negative effect of the internet on football is that it means alot of access to games online is aavailable. This doesnt help the sport at all. People are able to buy their eway to watching a game online, which iwll either be free, or at a cheaper price than if you were to buy a ticket to go and watch the game. This will always seem like a better option to actually watching the game at the ground. One reason is because you are in the warmth of your own home, you can pause the live stream at anytime and resume it as you want. Another reason is that you have a much better view of the game if you are watching a live stream, which again will mean the internet option seems alot more appealing.
